Watching the macaques at Jigokudani Monkey Park

The arrival of December also marks the beginning of the peak season for macaque-watching at Jigokudani Monkey Park. Located in the northern part of the Nagano prefecture, one of Japan’s premier winter destinations, this national park is one of the area’s most popular attractions and the only place in the world where you can watch wild Japanese macaques (otherwise known as ‘snow monkeys’) take a bath in the hot springs.
Surrounded by Nagano’s dramatic mountains and buried in snow for almost a third of the year, Jigokudani (which translates to ‘hell valley’) and its cold winter temperatures provide the perfect paradise for monkeys between December and March.
